Just as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee has focused on service to others and to the Commonwealth, so too did Her Majesty’s annual Christmas broadcast highlight the service of the many people who made the Diamond Jubilee and Olympic festivities so tremendously successful, and public service generally.
This year’s message concluded with the following: “The carol, ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’, ends by asking a question of all of us who know the Christmas story, of how God gave himself to us in humble service: ‘What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a wise man, I would do my part’. The carol gives the answer, ‘Yet what I can I give him – give my heart’.”
A message such as this, coming as it does from a woman whose entire life has been devoted to public service, will surely inspire many to serve their Queen and their country with humility.
